Mounds Projects
To address the global climate crisis through his work, David developed the Mounds Projects. Land Art, situated at the intersection of conservation and the craft of basketry.
Based on the theory of the Hugel Mound, (derived from the Hugelkulture, which means mound culture or hill culture), a centuries-old horticultural technique of raised planting beds constructed from rotting wood and other compostable biomass. David then envelopes the mound with the plaited branches of culled, invasive saplings. The mounds with their plaited surfaces provide sculptural beauty, and inspiration for new baskets eventually decompose forming rich planting beds from the former waste products.
